Darrell Ruban served as the Associate Administrator for Safety at the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) from February 2022 through February 2025, where he was a principal advisor to the Administrator and Chief Safety Officer/Executive Director. Darrell was responsible for leading national safety programs and advised on many issues including overall CMV transportation safety, autonomous vehicle rulemaking and oversight, CDL requirements and compliance, grants, nationwide operations and operational policy, and training. During this time, Darrell was successful in implementing various national programs to include entry-level driver training, and drug and alcohol clearinghouse.

During Darrell’s 35-year government career, he served in multiple capacities, including safety impacts as an investigator, training manager, and leader in national safety programs to include commercial enforcement and compliance. As a Senior Executive, Darrell was responsible for FMCSA’s southern region providing oversight and leadership to its southern divisions as its Regional Field Administrator.

Before accepting his first position with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in 1990, Darrell served in operational management positions in the transportation industry. He continues to build and strengthen safety practices and partnerships with stakeholders to continually enhance safety impacting the CMV transportation life cycle.

Darrell is a graduate of the American Public University and has completed leadership programs at the Federal Executive Institute and Harvard School of Government.
